Florida Keys Area Dive Sites Palm Beach Ft. Lauderdale Miami-Dade Florida Keys |
The San Pedro Archaeological Preserve is located 1.4 miles southwest of Indian Key in 18 feet of water and is a wonderful beginner dive. In 1733 a Hurricane swept through the Florida Keys and swamped a 287-ton Spanish galleon in the shallows of Islamorada. The remnants of the vessel are surrounded by turtle grass. There are 90 linear feet of ballast stones and red ladrillo gallery bricks which share a sandy patch reef with a healthy population of marine life. Since this is a preserve, nothing can be removed. Take your time and examine all the nooks and crannies as you will find all kinds of treasures like Pederson shrimp in corkscrew anemones, flame scallops in crevices and juvenile tropical fish. |
