Florida Keys Area Dive Sites Palm Beach Ft. Lauderdale Miami-Dade Florida Keys |
Conch Reef is one of the few deep reef dives to be found in the Keys. From the shallows in less than 10 feet of water, this horseshoe-shaped reef gently slopes down to about 60 feet. From here the near vertical drop-off reaches over 120 feet, featuring giant barrel sponges and lots of marine life. From the large red nun buoy, head southeast several hundred yards to find the drop-off. This classic tongue and groove reef system may be the best mini-wall in the Keys! Located just north of the marker buoy, the Aquarius Underwater Research Facility is located on the edge of the wall at about 60 feet. Here, NOAA marine biologists and geologists study the changing environment in this underwater laboratory. Divers will find the structure surrounded by thousands of fish and many small invertebrates. From time to time the habitat is removed from the site for maintenance, so check with local dive operators for the latest information. |
