Florida Keys Area Dive Sites Palm Beach Ft. Lauderdale Miami-Dade Florida Keys |
The remains of the wooden Benwood Wreck are marked by a spar buoy and four mooring buoys established and maintained by the Pennekamp Park staff. There's a few rotting timbers and a pile of ballast stones here, only 30 feet deep in a sandy bottom. You'll find plenty of fire coral, sea fans and small sponges around the wreck site. Look closely to find tiny jawfish emerging from their burrows in the sand to cautiously check out the visiting divers. One false move and the little jawfish retreats into his hole in the blink of an eye. The male jawfish holds the eggs in his mouth for about 5 days, until they hatch and swim off to establish their own burrow nearby, or make a tasty snack for reef predators. |
