Miami Area Dive Sites The Dive Charter Operator I recommend to dive these wreck sites is: RJ Diving Ventures |
The Almirante is a 200 foot steel freighter that was sunk by DERM (Department of Environmental Resource Management) in the Sportfishing Council Southern Artificial Reef Site. This site is located south of Miami off Elliot Key with GPS Latitude 25 24" 58.8" and Longitude 80 7" 3.0" This once pristine wreck was picked up by the force of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and twisted and placed back on the bottom upside down, showing Mother Nature's intensity. The site is still a wonderful dive, but quite deep at 135+. Adorned with bright red gorgonians, there is not much relief now, but lots of twisted metal offering much to explore. A law that was passed the mid 1980's to protect the massive jewfish (Goliath Grouper). Now their population is starting to make a comeback, and the Almirante has several resident jewfish living deep within the remains of her hull. |
